122 Hello Sandie Shaw - Always Something There To Remind Me
Chart entered : 8 October 1964
Chart peak : 1
Number of hits : 20
Sandie is actually just six months younger than Helen Shapiro but had to wait a bit longer for her chance to come round.
She was born Sandra Goodrich in Dagenham in 1947 and began working at Ford's on leaving school. She did some modelling part-time before winning second prize in a local talent contest. Her reward was a singing slot at a London charity contest where she was spotted by Adam Faith and signed up by Eve Taylor.
She set Sandie to work with young songwriter Chris Andrews who came up with "As Long As You're Happy Baby" for her first single. It's a decent attempt at Dusty-esque epic pop with an exuberant vocal from Sandie although the guitar repeatedly threatening to reproduce the Needles And Pins riff becomes a bit of a distraction.
Taylor chose this Bacharach-David song, a moderate US hit for Lou Johnson for the follow-up. The Popular thread on this one is pretty good. Sandie Shaw
