105 Hello Cilla Black - Love Of The Loved
Chart entered : 17 October 1963
Chart peak : 35
Number of hits : 21
It's about time we had another female even if it's not one who does much for me. Cilla's record speaks for itself. Yes she had the right friends but there were plenty of others could make the same boast and fell by the wayside.
Priscilla White was born in Liverpool in 1943. She left school at 14 and became a typist. She was not exactly plucked from the cloakroom at the Cavern and thrust onto the stage; she had taken the job with the aim of getting to know the bands and hustling her way to a singing career. It paid off when John Lennon introduced her to Brian Epstein. Epstein as we know was not very interested in girls and she flunked her first audition despite having the Fab Four as her backing band. He eventually signed her in September 1963 and introduced her to George Martin.
Lennon and McCartney gave her this so-so song which they had performed at their Decca audition but not recorded for Please Please Me and Martin produced. The record was made in a rush and it shows. The brass is too loud and Cilla's voice , never the loveliest of instruments, is horrible here with her grating nasal tone and Scouse vowels. It needed all of Epstein's promotional know-how to get as high as it did.
